Invisalign Can Straighten Smiles, But Can It Fix Bite Problems?

With its discreet appearance and removeable clear aligners, Invisalign has become one of the most popular orthodontic treatments available today. Like traditional braces, it can align crooked teeth to produce an aesthetically pleasing smile, but what about if you have an overbite? Or an underbite? Can it fix those, too? Let’s discuss the extent of Invisalign’s powers.

What is a Bite Problem?

Your bite refers to the way your upper and lower teeth come together when you close your mouth. Ideally, your teeth should fit together comfortably and allow you to chew and speak properly.

The typical problems that occur with bites are:

  • Overbite: The top front teeth significantly overlap the lower front teeth.
  • Underbite: The bottom teeth stick out farther than the upper teeth.
  • Crossbite: Some upper teeth sit inside the lower teeth when biting down.
  • Open Bite: A gap occurs between the top and bottom teeth when the mouth is closed.

Some people also have excessive spacing or crowding that affects how their teeth come together.

If left untreated, certain bite problems can contribute to uneven tooth wear, difficulty cleaning your teeth, jaw discomfort, or other oral health concerns.

How Can Invisalign Help?

Invisalign uses a series of custom-made clear aligners to gradually move your teeth. Each set is designed to make specific adjustments according to your personalized treatment plan.

For appropriate candidates, aligners can move individual teeth and improve the relationship between the upper and lower teeth. Small attachments may also be placed on certain teeth to give the aligners additional control over tooth movement.

At your initial consultation, your orthodontist will use digital scans, photographs, X-rays, and other information to develop your treatment plan and determine what movements are possible.

Can Invisalign Fix Every Bite Problem?

Not necessarily. The complexity and severity of your bite problem matter. Invisalign can address many mild to moderate orthodontic concerns, but some complex cases may require traditional braces, specialized orthodontic appliances, or another treatment approach.

The underlying cause of your bite problem is also important. Some bite issues are related primarily to tooth positioning, while others involve the relationship or development of the jaws. Your provider can determine which factors are contributing to your bite.

Is Invisalign Right for Me?

It all depends on how severe your bite problem is. Invisalign lacks the same force and capabilities that traditional braces have to move teeth. If it’s a mild enough case, clear aligners could very well do the trick. If it’s a more complex issue in which the space between where your top and bottom teeth meet is large enough, other treatments may be necessary.

If you want a definite yes or no answer, you will need to schedule a consultation with your orthodontist so they can examine your smile and determine the appropriate type of care.

If you have an issue with your bite, don’t assume traditional braces are your only option! Invisalign may be able to improve certain bite problems while also straightening your teeth. Book an appointment with your orthodontist to find out what your options are.
