What Should I Do If My Aligner Doesn’t Fit?

Invisalign and other clear aligner systems have made orthodontic treatment more comfortable and convenient than ever. However, sometimes you may notice that your aligner doesn’t fit quite right—it might feel too tight, too loose, or simply not seat properly over your teeth. While this can be concerning, it’s a common issue that can usually be resolved with a few simple steps.

Here’s what to do if your aligner doesn’t fit properly and how to get your treatment back on track.

Identify What “Doesn’t Fit” Means

There are different ways an aligner might not fit correctly, and understanding the issue can help determine what to do next. You might notice:

  • Gaps between the aligner and your teeth, especially near the edges.
  • Difficulty snapping it into place on one or more teeth.
  • Tightness or pressure that feels unusually strong.
  • Loose fit where the aligner doesn’t stay seated.

A small amount of tightness is normal when switching to a new tray, as your teeth are beginning to move. But if the aligner feels like it won’t seat at all or pops off easily, it likely needs adjustment or assistance from your dentist.

Use Aligner Chewies

One of the first things to try is using aligner chewies—small, soft cylinders made of rubbery material that help seat your aligners more snugly against your teeth. Simply place the chewie between your teeth and bite down gently for a few minutes several times a day, especially after putting in a new tray.

This helps push the aligner fully into place and can often resolve small gaps or fit issues within a day or two.

Check for Debris or Damage

Sometimes, your aligner may not fit because something is blocking it. Remove the tray and inspect it for:

  • Food particles or plaque buildup.
  • Cracks or warping from hot water or heat exposure.
  • Distortion from improper cleaning methods.

If you find damage, do not try to bend or force the aligner back into shape, as that could make it worse. Instead, contact your dentist or orthodontist for advice.

Make Sure You’re on the Right Tray

It might sound obvious but double-check that you’re using the correct set of aligners in the right order. Skipping ahead or mixing up trays can cause fit issues because your teeth haven’t moved enough to match the next aligner.

If you’ve lost or broken your previous set and jumped ahead to the next one, your dentist may recommend wearing your last aligner for a few more days or ordering a replacement.

Contact Your Dentist

If your aligner still doesn’t fit after trying the above steps for a couple of days, call your dentist or orthodontist. They can evaluate your progress and determine what’s going on.

In some cases, they may:

  • Rescan your teeth and order a new aligner.
  • Adjust your treatment plan.
  • Recommend “backtracking” to a previous tray for a few days.

It’s important not to ignore a poor fit—an ill-fitting aligner can slow or even reverse your progress.

A misfitting aligner is usually nothing to panic about, but it’s something you should address quickly. Using chewies, keeping your trays clean, and staying consistent with wear can often fix the problem. If not, your dental professional can easily adjust your treatment plan to get you back on track.
