Tooth extractions can feel a little intimidating for both kids and parents, but they’re more common in pediatric dentistry than you might think. Whether your child’s tooth is being removed because it’s badly decayed, damaged, or making room for permanent teeth, proper aftercare is the key to a smooth recovery. With the right steps, you can help your little one heal quickly, stay comfortable, and avoid complications.
Keep the Gauze in Place
After the extraction, your dentist will place a small piece of gauze over the site to help stop bleeding and promote clot formation. Have your child bite down gently but firmly on the gauze for the recommended time, usually around 20 to 30 minutes. If bleeding continues, replace the gauze with a fresh piece and encourage them to keep it in place without chewing or talking too much.
Manage Pain and Swelling
Some discomfort and swelling are normal in the first day or two after the procedure. Over-the-counter pain relievers approved by your child’s dentist or pediatrician can help manage discomfort. You can also use a cold compress on the outside of the cheek for short intervals to reduce swelling.
Encourage Rest and Relaxation
Kids may be eager to return to their normal routines, but rest is essential for healing. Encourage quiet activities like reading, drawing, or watching a favorite show for the first 24 hours. Avoid sports, running, or any vigorous activity that could dislodge the clot and delay recovery.
Stick to Soft Foods
For the first couple of days, choose soft, easy-to-chew foods like yogurt, applesauce, mashed potatoes, and smoothies. Avoid hot foods, crunchy snacks, and anything that requires chewing near the extraction site. Drinking through a straw should also be avoided, as the suction can disturb the healing clot.
Maintain Gentle Oral Hygiene
Good oral hygiene is still important after an extraction, but it should be done carefully. Have your child brush their teeth gently, avoiding the extraction site. Rinsing should be delayed for the first 24 hours, then resumed with a mild warm saltwater rinse to keep the area clean and reduce the risk of infection.
Follow Up with the Dentist
A follow-up appointment allows the dentist to make sure your child is healing properly and address any concerns. Even if your child feels fine, it’s important not to skip this step, as some complications can develop without obvious symptoms.
A little extra care and attention can help your child recover quickly and comfortably after a tooth extraction.
