Many dentists still offer dentures to their patients, even as dentistry has evolved over time. That alone should testify to how well the prosthetics work as replacement teeth. However, a lot of folks spread nasty rumors and myths about dentures that simply aren’t true. You’d do well to note these stereotypes and not let them dissuade you from treatment. So, read on to learn four common denture myths and why they’re untrue nonsense.

“Dentures Look Very Fake”

While some early models may have looked fake, modern dentures are different. The kinds you’ll find today are often lifelike, assuming you get quality pairs.

It’s only very cheap dentures that tend to look fake. Their materials are low quality and don’t blend well with adjacent teeth, highlighting their artificiality. On the other hand, good-quality dentures at a higher price will usually look quite natural.

“Dentures Always Fall Out Easily”

Some dentures can indeed slip from your mouth at times. That said, the idea that they always and easily fall out is false.

Today’s dentures are actually made to fit snugly. Lab workers will make them based on dental impressions, ensuring the final devices match your oral cavity’s contours. That means they’ll only slip or fall from your mouth if they become ill-fitting, usually due to age (whether your own or that of the dentures).

“Dentures are Hard to Eat With”

Many people struggle to eat with dentures at first. Still, that difficulty often passes with time; most folks can have meals with them easily after a while.

Remember: Modern dentures are customized for a snug, proper fit. Since that’s the case, they shouldn’t slip or slide around when you’re having a meal. You just need to practice using your dentures to make them easy to use. From there, they’ll let you eat all sorts of food without difficulty.

“Dentures are Only for Old People”

If you keep up with pop culture, you may see dentures as an “old people” treatment. Even so, the truth is closer to the opposite: people of all ages can benefit from such prosthetic teeth.

Dentures simply aren’t age-specific devices. In a given situation, young adults and even teens can qualify for them alongside the elderly. Whether dentures help you has less to do with years lived and more with tooth loss.

These and similar myths about dentures won’t do your smile any good. If you suffer from tooth loss, ignore them and talk to your dentist!
